"Catsfield Cabin
A semi-open structure that offers the user differing levels of cover and protection from the elements. This space was designed as a multiuse functional cabin. Upon entry the timber frame remains predominantly open, oak posts and beams invite the user inwards, with just a modest structure offering only its architectural presence and aesthetic. This area houses the outdoor pizza oven, log store and BBQ station.
As the user walks through the cabin, the roof above and walls to the side gradually start to gain fabric, hit and miss timbers begin to infill the structure and offer a sense of closure and warmth to the space. The intermittently placed timbers offer a dramatic sense of calm when the dappled light disperses through them, creating all sorts of interesting shade and light patterns during the daylight hours.
Of course, every outdoor space needs cover from the elements, this cabin gradually forms a fully weather-tight space, and the end section contains a functioning garden kitchen, with all the required services, shelving, cupboards and stone sink. The worktops were crafted using a section of locally sourced oak slab, planed, sanded and oiled, the live front edge has been left to naturally show off its curves. The galvanised light fittings and salvaged materials all add to the simplicity and charm of this tranquil secluded space.
The cabin merges into its external surroundings with the clever use of site levels and tampered topography. We excavated the area and created low-level earth mounds on either side of the structure, in addition to planting a number of native hedging plants, this has helped nestle the building into its countryside context.
'Catsfield Cabin is more than a structure—it’s a retreat that balances functionality, aesthetics, and harmony with the environment.'"
