First founded in 1991 and relaunched in 2024 by the grandsons of the original founder, Barbary is a family-owned business producing beautiful hand-thrown Moroccan terracotta pots, known for their unique designs and unmistakable pale pink colouring.
The relaunch of Barbary after two decades was a journey full of detective work and nostalgia. Sifting through dusty archives, piecing together old records and handwritten notes capturing the essence of the original brand, each small discovery offered a glimpse into Barbary’s history and values. Finally tracking down the original pottery, the craftsmen who made them, and the children who have inherited their craft, it felt like the reuniting of long-lost friends. Conversations continued to reveal insights and anecdotes that breathed life back into the story, and eventually inspired the relaunch of a once cherished brand.
Each terracotta pot by Barbary is a product of centuries-old techniques, hand-thrown and shaped by skilled craftsmen. By working with local potters, Barbary not only promotes the beauty and authenticity of Moroccan craftsmanship but also supports the livelihoods of the artisans who keep these traditions alive. This approach builds an appreciation for handmade, sustainable products, whilst offering customers a chance to bring a piece of Moroccan culture into their home.
Barbary’s pots are made from a unique blend of clay from three mineral-rich regions, naturally high in iron and silica which enhances the terracotta’s durability after firing. Each pot is crafted in multiple stages, with some of the largest designs taking up to 30 days to complete. The pots are air-dried gradually before being triple fired at over 1,200°C. Thanks to our specific clay blend, the terracotta absorbs less water, making it particularly resistant to frost damage.
