About Us

Established in 2017 by Gordon Leney, GL Studio is a London-based architectural and interior design practice with a holistic approach to architecture, interiors and landscape that seeks to enhance and reimagine existing spaces while respecting their cultural and historical integrity.

The studio works in both urban and rural landscapes and in a number of sectors including private residential, cultural, workplace and hospitality. Celebrating the reuse and re-invention of existing buildings and often revealing layers of historical use, they design within context, applying a sensitivity to issues of heritage whilst overlaying a contemporary aesthetic and relevance for modern use.

Their approach is collaborative and analytical, delivering non-formulaic solutions which underpin their clients’ aspirations and restore a sense of authenticity and meaning to the buildings they inhabit.

How would you describe your style?

"GLSTUDIO’s design style is broadly contemporary, with a considered understanding of context. A respect for this context is applied whether the setting be historical or modern, resulting in a design that is always authentic. Broadly speaking, it could be said that their style is restrained and paired back rather than flamboyant, and it is guided and informed by the aspirations of the client and the architectural significance of the site."

"Private Residence, Clapham Common, London:

This substantial mid-nineteenth-century property on the north side of Clapham Common was purchased by clients who were relocating to London and sought a large property to showcase their important collection of contemporary Asian art, as well as providing a location for showing the work of new and upcoming artists. The property had undergone very little alteration in its lifetime and was rich in original architectural detailing. Briefed to provide both a family home and art gallery, GLSTUDIO were keen to retain as much of the original historical detailing, ensuring that the building’s rich architectural history was respected and incorporated. GLSTUDIO led the planning process ensuring much of the historical building fabric was restored. Original architectural components were carefully removed and restored ready for reinstatement, including original internal shutters, fireplaces and ironmongery. Moulds were made of all original cornicing and plasterwork in order to repair and reinstate where required. The original staircase was removed from the basement to the first floor and replaced, in a new location with an elegant limestone-clad stair with traditional cast iron balustrades.

Modern amenities such as air conditioning, underfloor heating, audio-visual installation and smart controls were incorporated seamlessly into the restoration which also included a new gallery space in a side extension. This was the creation of a family home which combines authentic historical context with all the requirements of contemporary living."
