About Us

The Linen Ladder is a British textile design studio working from a converted barn in rural Kent. Their nature-inspired designs are printed in England using the finest linen available because they firmly believe that ‘only the best will do’.

Founder Sarah Castle started her career working in the fabric department at Liberty of London where she discovered a real joy of texture, colour and style and developed a lasting passion for fabric. After years of travelling and working all over the world from India, Australia and sailing across the South Pacific Ocean, Sarah has gathered her own eclectic collection of fabrics from around the globe. Moving to rural Kent with her family and surrounded by meadows and woodland, Sarah was inspired to create her own fabrics. Each design starts life as a line drawing or a watercolour. Sarah then works them into a repeating pattern, creating the final artwork ready for printing. She focuses on her core colours, ensuring the collections blend cohesively together.

The Linen Ladder sources linen with an enviable provenance because of its integrity and because it has a naturally low carbon footprint. The team are very conscious of fabric waste and work with pure linen because of its sustainability. The flax plant requires nothing more than soil, sun and rainwater and the woven linen is durable, reliable and full of character.

The Linen Ladder fabrics are for interior design and are suitable for soft furnishings, lampshades and upholstery. They fit the idiosyncrasies of British style from country houses and shepherd’s huts all the way to contemporary city living. Offering a bespoke printing service, they have access to a broad range of fine fabrics of varying weights. They are very happy to collaborate to ensure the customer gets exactly the right fabric for their design project.

How would you describe your style?

"Our style is natural and we aim to keep things simple. We use pattern and colour to design vibrant and cheerful interiors. Colour is at the heart of what we do and I instinctively know when it’s right. By adding an assortment of our core colours together, we create drama and spontaneity which is exciting and inevitably transforms an interior space. We get a great deal of pleasure seeing our Collections blend so well. I love it and find it very rewarding, with the end result that our customers have something highly individual in their home. It’s uplifting and always inspiring."

"Bespoke projects have included made-to-order table linen for The Lion & Castle for their guest residence at the beautiful Bolebroke Castle. Dating from 1272 (with tales of Henry VIII staying to visit Anne Boleyn), it was a privilege to work with Lisa to find a fit for her luxury holiday cottage.

We also work with Fine Cell Work to produce highly individual hand-embroidered cushions using our Hydrangea design. I love working with this charity because their work is tangible. They are teaching a fine and delicate skill, giving the stitcher a sense of purpose and hope which is so encouraging. The needlework the prisoners produce is stunning and we are thrilled with the end results."
