"One of Design & Lo’s most notable projects was the extension development located in Balham, London. The brief was to turn a tired one-bedroom Victorian ground-floor flat into a modern and spacious home, perfect for entertaining friends in the city.
Although the original rooms had some stunning period features, they weren’t celebrated, and the overall layout was uninspiring and impractical. Like so many Victorian configurations, the kitchen was small and buried in the centre of the apartment with doors opening onto a dark side passage.
Design & Lo surveyed the flat and drew up the plans, re-working the whole layout of the flat according to the client’s needs, so each room was a better proportion, and the overall flow and general circulation were greatly improved.
A light-filled extension was added, making full use of the side return, adding much-needed square footage and creating a large kitchen, living and dining area which became the hub of the home. Bespoke angled steel windows and doors were installed which contrasted perfectly with the existing period features of the property whilst a small lightwell in the centre of the flat meant we could maximise the natural light throughout creating a view through to the courtyard garden.
For the kitchen/living area, we chose a fresh and neutral modern base colour for the walls which paired perfectly with the statement charcoal grey kitchen with beautifully designed knurled brass ironmongery. Vintage French mirrors with a rustic patina and mid-century chairs were added to create a timeless, crafted elegance. A classic oak dining table with benches was introduced to create laid-back warmth and feature concrete and resin pendants creating a layered lighting scheme and atmospheric mood.
The Design & Lo team designed the layout, material specification and bespoke joinery for the courtyard garden. It was important to create a strong connection between the indoor/outdoor living spaces, so the team were considerate of the material finishes being used in all spaces. Lois was conscious of bringing the greenery from the outdoors in, balancing the industrial nature of the steel windows and doors with the softer natural tones.
As with all projects, Lois carefully listened to the client and their requirements to create soulful, individual designs that expertly blend modern and classical elements. In this instance, the team worked closely with the contractor to ensure that the project was as smooth as possible."
