The Jacobean Grade II listed country home had strong architectural features, but the sitting/dining room areas lacked character and needed softening to create a welcoming space for the family to relax and enjoy being together in. The client wanted us to inject colour and pattern, but without feeling overwhelmed, and to source furniture that reflected her personality. We chose soft smoke paint for the walls, mixing dusky pinks and greys with teal and amethyst to add rich yet subtle layers to the colour scheme. Full length, generous curtains were made to draw attention to the Jacobean windows and to add warmth for wintry evenings, the clean lines of the contemporary wood burner setting off the original inglenook fireplace. We found an unusual coffee table made from an old wooden door in Paris for the simple centrepiece to anchor the two sofas. The dining room needed livening up. We sourced the unusual-shaped chandelier and elegant, oversized chest of drawers to compliment the fire damaged mercury mirror the client already owned. The long Eastern European bench placed on the window side of the table was a particularly pleasing find because the quirky detailing carved along the top of its high back provides a characterful focal point which immediately catches your attention from the kitchen.
