About Us

Every great idea starts with a moment of inspiration. Naturalmat’s, rather unusually, came on the high seas, over two decades ago. Founders Mark Tremlett and Peter Tindall, both keen sailors, struggled to understand why mattresses on boats were so uncomfortable. So, in Mark's family boatyard on the banks of the River Exe, they began hand-making natural fibre mattresses that wouldn’t sweat, were fabulously comfortable and fitted neatly into a boat’s awkward spaces.

After the birth of Mark’s first child, they then had a light bulb moment. Why not devote the same thinking to baby mattresses? After all, little ones deserve a good night’s sleep too—not to mention the lovely, breathable qualities of an entirely natural product. And with that, Naturalmat was born.

That was 2000. Today Naturalmat is a leading manufacturer of organic mattresses in the nursery and children’s market in the UK, Europe and USA, suppling leading hotel groups from Brooklyn to Bhutan, and should you set foot on some of the world’s finest superyachts, you will inevitably find a Naturalmat mattress onboard.

How would you describe your style?

"We make all our mattresses by hand, filling them with organic and natural fibres from sustainable and renewable sources. They are synthetic-free and pass all UK fire standards without having to use harmful chemical fire retardants.

Our bed frames lined with organic lambswool (no synthetics here either!) often have contemporary silhouettes with a soft rustic edge to them, using natural fibre textiles for upholstery."

Please describe a recently completed project or tell us about the bespoke service that you offer

"We’ve just recently sent off shipments to the new Six Senses Hotel in New York, the soon to open Qbic Hotel in Manchester and to The Hoxton in the heart of Rome. We've also recently worked on The Royal Oak in the Cotswolds, designed by Nicola Harding & Co and Lou Calen in Cotignac, a boutique hotel project of Hannah Lohan Interiors."
