Since 1999, Les Indiennes has sustained and modernized the ancient Indian tradition of Kalamkari. Washed by hand in the Krishna River, organic cotton bleaches in the sun along its banks. Mastercraftsman Srinivas and his son Varun apply dyes made from local ingredients such as indigo, madder root, and pomegranate.
Designer Mary Mulcahy distils elements from complicated Kalamkari designs into clean, ethereal patterns suitable for both formal and minimalist interiors. “Imperfection is the essence of beauty,” Mulcahy says. Along with quilts, duvets and other bedding, curtains, shower curtains, wall hangings and bandanas, Les Indiennes recently launched twenty-one wallpaper patterns. Les Indiennes proudly creates jobs in Andhra Pradesh using only socially- and environmentally-conscious methods.
