About Us

VaRa Garden Design is an award-winning collaboration between garden designers Vanessa Hoch and Rachel Pocock. An imaginative and creative practice, VaRa brings wonderfully crafted gardens to life, specialising in residential projects in Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties. With a high level of skill, creativity and attention to detail, the pair thoroughly enjoy a hands-on approach, working alongside their clients throughout the process.

In each project Vanessa and Rachel take inspiration from their clients’ brief, their interior taste and style, as well as from the surrounding landscape and existing features. They deliver individual schemes that add value and enhance the clients’ experience of the garden.

The pair work collaboratively with landscapers, architects and other specialist contractors to source materials and finishes to create stunning features. And with a passion for planting, they ensure that at the heart of every garden, there are seasonal highlights and year-round textural presence, creating beautifully balanced and welcoming spaces.

"Working always with a sense of place, from existing architectural details to framing vistas and views, we bring cohesive and sympathetic design to each individual project, sourcing materials that help to tie the scheme together. Adding bespoke garden buildings enhances the usability of a space, while sculptural pieces can provide stunning focal points (whatever the scale of the garden), and ensures individuality in each design.

Our thoughtful planting design ensures year round presence and seasonal moments of interest bringing wonderful textural aspects to the space. Statement specimens and oversized pots and water elements can also offer unique focal points, providing movement, sound and colour.

We are mindful that a garden is enjoyed as much from inside as it is from out, so we always consider framing views from within the home to invite our clients out into their garden to relax, entertain and explore. Whatever our clients’ requirements, garden location and architectural style, we design creatively and implement with attention to detail."
