"For this garden in Highgate, the clients wanted a space where their extended family could come together, that complemented the bold contemporary architecture of the house and created what was to be the ‘best painting in the house’ when viewed from the full-width glass elevation of the ground floor.
The contemporary styling of the architect’s reimagined Arts and Crafts design is projected out into the garden, with strong clean lines in the hard landscaping softened with billowing and informal planting. As you step out of the house onto a wide terrace, a set of steps leads to a still, reflective water feature. A single giant stepping stone leads you across the water and into the rest of the garden. The branches of a multi-stem Zelkova serrata and the silhouettes of ferns and perennials are reflected in the surface of the water, creating a calm and tranquil atmosphere to a second terrace and informal seating area centred around a fire bowl. Surrounded by planting this terrace forms the main focus of the garden.
Opposite this is an island bed surrounded by a border of Belgian paving bricks and planted with a palette of textural greens and a single multi-stem Prunus serrulata Shiro-Fugen. A generous lawn with mixed herbaceous borders down each side leads to a secluded seating area at the rear of the garden. Nestled under a louvered pergola, this quiet spot affords a lovely view back across the garden and onto the rear of the house."
