About Us

Hum London is a young lighting brand specialising in hand-painted lampshades and one-of-a-kind designs made from vintage textiles.

Founded in 2020 by sisters Hermione and Ellie Gee, the London-based design studio is a celebration of soulful lighting, with sustainable values and good quality at its heart. Hum's signature lampshades are hand-painted in soft, warm colours and patterns - from stripes and ginghams to celestial illustrations - which can also be commissioned in bespoke sizes and custom colourways.

Inspired by a shared love of antiques and giving new life to old treasures, last year marked a new chapter for the brand – creating limited edition lampshades made from reworked vintage fabrics. The first in this series, the Prairie Collection, celebrates the delicate patterns of hand-embroidered linens dating back to the 18th century, which emit a soft, dappled light.

Hum London also offers a bespoke design service, creating one-of-a-kind painted lampshades for both private clients and interior designers, as well as custom shapes and sizes.

How would you describe your style?

"Often drawing from our backgrounds in costume design and fashion, Hum’s style is united by a love of soulful lighting, which brings interest and warmth to the places they’re used.

Our style is anchored in responsibly made collections that can be rich with character while also quite subtle and textural. The latest iteration of this would be our Atlas and Juno lampshades, which are plain shades decorated with little holes that form undulating stripes - a delicate pattern on the surface of the shade that comes to life when the light is turned on. They feel simple and quite magical at the same time, with the twinkling light and soothing golden glow that’s cast from the premium quality card shade.

In our design process, we spend a lot of time looking at the small details and how a thoughtfully designed and well-made lampshade can play a key role in the ambience of the room, particularly focusing on the look and feel of the lampshades when the light is both on and off."

Please describe a recently completed project or tell us about the bespoke service that you offer

"We can create a completely new lampshade design, drawing inspiration from the wider scheme, or focus on particular details - such as custom-coloured stripes or painting a lampshade's trim to match the room's joinery, for example.

We offer this service to private clients and interior designers, with a highlight being a series of large Matisse-inspired lanterns, which we made in collaboration with Cupla Studio, to hang in Rixo's flagship London store.

Another recent favourite was working with Hessian Studio on a project in LA. The client had sourced an amazing ceramic lamp from a gallery in Paris, and Hessian commissioned us to design an abstract lampshade that would pair with the lamp and echo the design of the room. The end result being an oversized cream lampshade that was decorated in a painterly design, using plaster pink natural paint."
