About Us

Sophia Frances is a textile designer whose eponymous brand produces fabrics rooted in a passion for British textiles. Known for their playful take on heritage patterns, her designs feature confident, large-scale florals, informal zig-zags, stripes, painterly abstracts and delicate small-scale prints. A former fashion retail buyer, Sophia runs her studio alongside Laura Hassan, a creative whose background in interior design deeply informs the look and feel of these British-produced fabrics.

Inspired by a love of experimental painting and drawing, Sophia’s hand can be seen in every design. Each starts life as watercolour and ink, before being developed through a variety of printing methods and then digitally printed on linen. ‘We’re influenced by Britain’s rich craft heritage,’ says Sophia. ‘Studying design details from the past, visiting the V&A archives and looking through embroidery paintings of the nineteenth century is a vital part of the process.

How would you describe your style?

"Each of the studio’s fabrics riffs on classic chintz, stripes, naturescapes and painterly florals, adding its own contemporary twist, whether through an unexpected colourway, a confident scale-up or a playful pattern arrangement. ‘The rural setting of our Georgian farmhouse studio has recently inspired more pastoral designs, but we also look to the eclectic nature of city living,’ says Sophia. ‘Above all, our fabrics have a maximalist, joyful thread running through them, combined with a directional use of colour and print. They are each a celebration of colour and creativity.’
