A recent brief, from a family based in London, asked Janine Stone & Co. to implement a full interior design and refurbishment of a listed mansion they had acquired in Kensington and bring it successfully into the modern era. Typical of the Queen Anne revival period, the property had an iconic red brick façade and handsome period features inside including; intricate cornices and magnificent ceiling moldings. The natural characteristics of the property, in particular the large scale of the rooms, lent themselves to showcasing some of the best one-off furniture pieces designed and commissioned by Janine Stone including; a five metre pale blue haze marble credenza, oversized taupe sofa and curtains, diaphanously treated to create a delicate patina of light across the main drawing room. Some rooms were remodelled to enhance their proportion and improve the flow between adjoining rooms.
The interior included references to classical, contemporary and mid-century design and creates an aesthetic that is truly personalised to the clients’ lifestyle and tastes. Many of the palette choices, textures and finishes throughout the property were inspired by the paintings of Maltese artist Ġoxwa Borg, for which Janine Stone’s client owned a significant collection of works. Janine Stone & Co. were given a great level of creative freedom for the design of this family home. The international clients were away for almost all of the eighteen months it took to complete with perhaps two site visits before commencement of the project and partway through the process. “When a client entrusts every element to the designer, it’s a tremendous responsibility to ensure one delivers a home that meets and exceeds their expectations.” – Janine Stone The Janine Stone architectural, heritage specialist, interior design and project management services were utilised for this project alongside a range of Janine Stone managed and directed consultants. The completed residence featured 6 bedroom suites, two drawing rooms, a study, 7 bathrooms, kitchen/ breakfast room, cinema room, utility room, morning room, dining room - a lift that served the house.
This project blended the most handsome period features with the best of contemporary living to give a tired listed London town house a new lease of life. Janine has managed to imbue the house with a sense of refinement and comfort which has given the client an enviable style of living.
