Award-winning lighting consultants K&S now offer a new online lighting design service. The design duo has been creating lighting solutions for global brands, prestigious hotels and luxury private homes for over twenty five years. Now their creative skills and expertise are available to everyone wishing to benefit from this experience – all from the comfort of home. The idea for Home Lighting Ideas was conceived during lockdown and is intended to help everyone enjoy lighting as they develop their designs.
As a small, independent consultancy, Kate and Sam are excited to offer this bespoke, focused design service. Past projects include the private homes of stars and royalty, 5* hotels and restaurants worldwide including 25 Wahaca restaurants, The Avenell Club Emirates Stadium, Adare Manor, Athenaeum Hotel, Langham Hotel, Grade I-listed Llanelli House, Bonhams Knightsbridge, the British Pavilion Shanghai Expo landscape, Harrods toy department, Odeon Leicester Square, and the Sweet History of York, among others.
Simply book a time slot in the online calendar, attaching relevant documentation such as mood boards, drawings or architect plans. K&S will then research and prepare for a video call. After reviewing the information they will brainstorm, answer questions, propose improvements and sketch solutions. Specific lighting questions can be discussed, including light fixtures, control and lamp suggestions. Invite an electrician or interior designer and lead the session with design goals in mind. All meeting notes and sketches will then be sent to clients after the video call, which is often enough to brief a good electrician.

"Lighting is the only design element that can change the mood and focus of a space with a single switch. Our starting questions are: what’s the space for? How will you be using it? How do you want to feel?. Then we need to understand the scale, style and colour palette to judge where, what and how much light will be required. A lighting scheme needs to fit a space like a tailor-made dress that flatters and makes you feel wonderful.
We recently finished a luxury family house hotel, designed to be homely, welcoming and ultra-comfortable. The original hall containing the library, games room and drawing room is listed, so we had to use existing cabling to embrace and build on the traditional techniques. The restaurant extension, on the other hand, could be fitted with a small control system to change lighting scenes throughout the day from breakfast (fresh and bright), to lunch (uplifting and relaxed), to tea and dinner (relaxed) to late dinner (moody, flattering and relaxed). We’ve used similar control settings in home kitchens, sometimes with the addition of an even brighter breakfast scene to help influence the owner's circadian rhythm."
