This recent project in Chelsea remodelled the interior of an early 20th Century school into a luxury home, fit for modern family life. The project itself was an exercise in combining contrasting interior elements, one where we could celebrate the rich architectural heritage of the space as well as introduce contemporary additions that spoke to the fashionable and worldly nature of the modern district. With its mix of high and low ceilings, columns that run down the middle of the main living space and lots of split levels, the scheme was an application in complex spatial design. We chose to feature the charming historical elements found in the property. Exposed brick and gloriously tall ceilings were highlighted using elegant art. The gold pendant chandelier above the staircase and the “If music be the food of love” installation in the entrance hall maximised on the dramatic double height rooms and connect the property in an open plan, airy scheme. The sumptuous colour palettes, inspired by the architecture of the building and the history of the locale, were paired with classic furniture pieces, such as wishbone dining chairs and mid-century lighting. We created an environment that is a warm, functional family home as well as an area in which to entertain and play! Details such as animal print in neutral tones, colourful vintage prints by the bedside and bold painterly wallpaper in the bathroom incorporate a youthful energy. The scheme here exemplifies my approach to interior design, one that seeks to develop a refreshing style that balances the very best of traditional and contemporary elements. It is an approach that produces unique results that proffer practicality with an enticing aesthetic.
