About Us

Tom is a British landscape designer, horticulturist and gardener who set up his practice shortly after graduating from The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. His work is underpinned by his innate understanding and knowledge as a plantsman and horticultural master, and an appreciation and awareness of place in the landscape. A regular at RHS Chelsea and winner of many medals including his most recent gold in 2022 for The Boodles Travel Garden.

An established figure at both RHS Chelsea and RHS Hampton Court, he has won three gold and four silver gilt and two silver medals, as well as the coveted People’s Choice Award for his arthritis UK sponsored garden and a nomination for The People’s Choice Award for Garden of The Decade in 2020.

The practice is based in a 400 year old converted barn at Tom’s property in the Suffolk countryside, where he and the team have space to create, and use the walled garden to trial and experiment new ideas and designs.

Since its conception in 2001, Thomas Hoblyn Garden Design has worked on projects from London townhouses to large country houses and rural estates, healing gardens, the rewilding of coastal land and public parks.

How would you describe your style?

"Tom and his team create landscapes and gardens which find their source in classical design, inspired and energised by Tom’s Kew training and development with more naturalist planting to blend seamlessly into their landscape.

Each project is a response to its own unique place and atmosphere, creating an environment where the client feels at ease in their space; a place to escape and delight. Tom’s relationships with his clients are personal and direct, encouraging client involvement in each project.

Following an ethic of sustainability, he seeks to increase the ecological diversity and richness of any landscape in which he works. Local materials are used wherever possible and plants are selected to fit and thrive in their surroundings."

"In the spring we completed a 1.5-acre woodland garden near Colchester. The property bears strong similarities to Beth Chatto’s garden; even the same architect designed both houses. So naturally, the resulting scheme was inspired by Beth Chatto, with meandering walks amongst woodland borders. The soil was acid and quite damp with a maritime climate, therefore, we were able to have an adventurous plant palette of magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons and kalmia – en par with the famous Cornish gardens. Though heavily planted, thorough ground preparation and liberal use of mulches, this will be a low-maintenance garden once established.

The design and development of a series of destinations in the garden, including a fully restored gypsy caravan and wildlife pond, help to encourage that all areas of the garden can to be enjoyed, whatever the weather."
