About Us

Haddon Studio are an award-winning Yorkshire-based garden design studio, creating gardens across Yorkshire, the north of England, and further afield.

We create exquisitely planted, detailed, and finished contemporary-styled and naturalistically planted gardens (responding to the site, expanding natural habitats, and artfully juxtaposing geometry against natural disorder), that are uniquely beautiful and enduring spaces where people and nature come together.

Although we specialise in the design of contemporary gardens, we are always mindful of the context in which the garden is made, and we are determined to deliver for our client's needs and to ensure a sustainable, sensitively overlaid, and biodiverse landscape is left in our wake.

We work with both residential clients and architects to deliver outstanding and inspiring gardens. We have experience designing and managing the build of schemes from high-end courtyard gardens to large country estates.

Matthew is a Registered Member of the Society of Garden Designers (MSGD), an Accredited Designer with the British Association of Landscape Industries (MBALI), a Registered Designer with the Association of Professional Landscapers (MAPL), and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture (MCIHort).

How would you describe your style?

"We sum up our approach to our style as 'Contemporary gardens, naturalistically planted, where people and wildlife coexist' - this means that we can be clear at the outset about what we are seeking to achieve, but it also allows us enough freedom to ensure that the garden works within the context of the site in which it sits."

"We were asked to help to transform and revitalise a large country garden for an old vicarage, parts of which had become neglected over time, and to create a garden that could be delivered in phases through a series of different garden rooms – each with a distinct character whilst unifying into a coherent whole. Our clients wanted to have spaces in which to garden, to relax, and simply to enjoy.

The garden now blends contemporary elements with the more traditional, to ensure that it will work harmoniously with the Old Vicarage and its renovated interior. To date, the first phases have delivered a generous terrace to the rear of the property (where before there was none), a new driveway with evergreen and seasonal planting to screen cars from view from the road, a reinvigorated Rose Garden, and a new Herb Garden – all blending artfully with the house and its setting.

In progress are the new productive garden (with the glasshouse now in place) and the water features - a reflective formal pool with a contemporary water feature and, separately, a wildlife pool, beside a summerhouse and a cantilevered deck, to allow bare feet to be dipped into the pool below."
