Robert Atherton's eponymous interior design practice specialises in well-planned, thought-out Interiors for domestic projects. He has over 30 years of experience in finding solutions that make each project unique, as well as providing clients with the very best service for their budget and meeting their exacting requirements.
He is more than happy to come up with concept ideas and hand these over for clients to instigate, manage and execute. However, most prefer Robert to project manage the works, sourcing fixtures and fittings within the set budget, and ensuring that everything is completed and installed to a high standard.
Robert firmly believes that good interior design is achievable and accessible to all. Purchasing a property is probably the biggest investment any of us make and it is essential to adapt it to suit our day-to-day needs. Whether a whole house or a flat, his clients are amazed at what can be achieved.
"We are passionate about interior design & architecture. Every commission is tailored individually to suit each client's taste & budget - be it in a contemporary or more traditional style. "We recently revisited a mansion flat in Westminster. In the 1990s, it was our clients' home and we had given it a very English, country house look. The family grew up, flew the nest and for a number of years, the property was tenanted. In 2019, the clients decided to move back into the flat, as the location, space, and proximity to family was perfect. They loved so much of what had been originally created that we endeavoured to retain as much of that detailing as we could. However, over the years their taste had become more contemporary so it was great fun to give the apartment a 21st-century feel. Between us and the client, we decided what was to be kept and re-used from their previous home (which I had also worked on).
The changes we’ve made are very subtle. We connected the two main reception rooms with a pair of tall, handsome pocket doors to allow greater flexibility, and this formed a wonderful entertaining space for their grown-up and extended family. We converted the original main bedroom into a cosy snug sitting room and adapted some of the wardrobe space to create an area for a television set and storage for office equipment. The kitchen was completely gutted and we combined an off-the-shelf range of units with our own quartz worktops. I designed a bespoke island which we had made off-site.
We converted one of the secondary bedrooms into the new main bedroom suite and linked it to an adjoining large bathroom which we re-planned to also include a bespoke built-in dressing area. We retained the existing marble vanity unit as it was still in perfect condition. At the far end of the flat, I deconstructed the second bathroom and turned it into two perfectly formed shower rooms, one of which is now the ensuite to a guest bedroom. All the services have been updated, air conditioning installed, and of course, a complete redecoration was needed throughout."
