About Us

SKIN is a boutique interior design firm specialising in high-end residential design. Co-founders Lauren Lozano Ziol and Michelle Jolas offer an exceptional level of service and project management skills. SKIN specialises in classic, timeless interiors with a modern edge – pairing antique finds with modern materials and styles.

The name “SKIN” goes deeper than alluding to the pair’s love of wallpapers, animal prints and textures – which are all signature elements of each project. Lauren and Michelle’s approach to design starts with getting under the skin of clients to uncover their different layers of personality, diversity and taste. Their aim is to create environments that surround people with beautiful things they love, which inspire confidence, ambition, passion and creativity, while also pushing clients out of their comfort zones. They believe that colours, organisation, textures and pattern all have the power to change a mood. This has never been more relevant than now, while people find themselves at home so much more.

Together, Lauren and Michelle make an impressive team. Lauren is considered one of Chicago’s top designers, counting 25 years of interior design experience, working in Paris and San Francisco, and holding degrees in both Interior Design and Art History, with an additional year spent studying Art History and Philosophy at Oxford. Meanwhile, Michelle is a serial entrepreneur, with 25 years of experience working for top global advertising agencies such as DDB Worldwide and FCB Global, managing campaigns for international luxury brands including The Peninsula Hotels and Hästens Beds. With this unusual dynamic, alongside their in-depth knowledge of techniques, processes and materials, the pair push each other’s style boundaries and explore all areas of design. Michelle’s graphic sensibility is the perfect compliment to Lauren’s old-world aesthetic, so in 2016, they decided to launch SKIN, as they wanted to combine their creative energy, shared passions, and ambition.

Educating clients is a top priority for SKIN. With Lauren’s background in art history and success in designing her own furniture line, SKIN is dedicated to ensuring their clients understand the provenance and the pieces curated throughout their home. As part of their educational and international approach, Lauren and Michelle welcome clients to join them on their design journeys by offering one-on-one or small group shopping trips to London, Paris, New York and San Francisco.

SKIN offers custom-made furniture and designs which draws upon Lauren’s favourite art deco and mid-century style influences. Aside from SKIN’s own furniture lines, a staple of their design services is revitalising furniture; they love to reupholster, repaint, and bring antiques back to life.

SKIN not only takes on large interior design projects with private residential clients, developers, commercial and hospitality spaces, but also offers design consultancy for smaller projects. SKIN has recently announced its new venture, Trinity Luxury Group, which is poised to take on the ambitious task of transforming beautiful European châteaux into art-minded luxury hotels and creative havens.

SKIN is currently launching a new office in London 2021.

How would you describe your style?

"SKIN’s style can be defined as timeless, classic and chic, with an edge. As business partners, Lauren and Michelle approach design from different backgrounds; Michelle’s graphic sensibility pushes Lauren’s more traditional aesthetic, but they both share a passion for the use of the unexpected, resulting in provocative combinations. Whether creating interiors inspired by old world antiques, chinoiserie, French art deco or mid-century masters, they are unafraid of anachronistic pairings, so expect to find Louis XIV tables matched with Milo Baughman chairs or a Biedermeier chest with Scolari lighting, in SKIN’s exciting living spaces."

"Lauren and Michelle’s different skills and styles, ensure that the pair constantly push each other out of their respective comfort zones, resulting in a classic yet edgy style defined by provocative combinations and use of the unexpected. Nowhere can this be seen more clearly than in their Breaking Trad project where SKIN was enlisted to decorate the recently renovated 1896 Lakeview home of April Bridgeman in Michigan. April called upon her friends at SKIN to make the house “comfortable and sophisticated, but also colourful and fun.” In answer to this, Lauren broke with traditional colour schemes and styles, introducing her love of deep, dusky blues to the period property. Lauren and Michelle flooded the original bones of this Lakeview mansion with a striking and contemporary design, resulting in a traditional, yet modern elegance. To balance the moody tones, SKIN used an eclectic mix of furnishings, wallpapers, vibrant art and photography, such as a Slim Aarons’ iconic image of a Palm Beach poolside party which hangs against the petrol blues of the living room.

In the bedroom, SKIN selected a traditional Gracie wallpaper pattern and installed it as framed panels – complete with gold leaf bamboo frames – which established an exciting yet sophisticated colour scheme in the master suite. Meanwhile downstairs, an Osborne & Little wallpaper introduced a veritable butterfly garden to Bridgeman’s home office. “It’s bright and playful, but also strong and chic,” says Michelle, whose eye for graphic wallpaper designs is seen throughout any SKIN project. Indeed, the name SKIN was initially a play on Lauren and Michelle’s mutual love of wallpaper, but the duo quickly realised that it had many more meaningful connotations too, from digging below the surface to get to know and understand a client’s personality, to the in-depth layering of colours, paints and style references that they apply to their projects. Getting under the skin of each client is essential – something that is set to be showcased in their forthcoming book, which looks at past projects and how interiors can have a transformative impact on someone’s life. As part of each project, Lauren and Michelle aim to educate their clients along the way on design, art and furniture while listening to their particular needs and vision. In this way, SKIN ensures that each space is as unique and diverse as the homeowners themselves."
