"LLI Design was recently commissioned to create a full interior design and refurbishment scheme for a large imposing Victorian villa bordering Hampstead Heath in London. The property was neglected and in a dilapidated state although many of the original features remained, and these were incorporated into the new design wherever possible. The owners wanted to extend the property, creating an exceptional home of circa 10,000 sq ft.

The brief was to create a 21st-century home that respected and acknowledged the building’s history and provenance. The furnishings and finishes throughout were designed to be contemporary, although wherever possible, original details such as cornicing, panelling and soffiting were maintained. It was important to blend the newly designed extension with the original building, creating a cohesive whole. To achieve this LLI Design amended the layout, enhancing the overall flow and feel. The clients particularly wanted a London interior design aesthetic to come through in the project.

The completed property featured a large kitchen dining room, two reception rooms, a formal dining room, a professional kitchen, a study, a master suite with his-and-her ensuites and dressing rooms, five further bedroom suites, and a utility room. At the rear of the house, the newly extended kitchen dining area has floor to ceiling aluminium framed glass sliding doors with a backlit metal screen at one side, set within rendered walls. We also added a rendered outdoor fireplace to the garden terrace.

Another terrace was created on top of the extension, accessed through the formal reception on the first floor. This featured a minimal glass balustrade, abundant planting and contemporary outdoor furniture, which was in contrast to the more traditional interior architectural features of the room preceding. The new light-filled kitchen dining room was designed to lend a calm ambience, with wide-plank wooden floors, metal, stone and lacquer detailing. Modern pendant lights and a subtle lighting scheme further enhanced the space.

The family living room featured a 3m long riven stone-clad ribbon fire, modern furnishings and artwork. The overall finished space gave a feeling of relaxed wellbeing and comfort. The formal dining room was situated in the Victorian part of the house; the furniture choices were contemporary with proportions suited to the room’s overall volume. Contemporary wallpaper helped to accentuate the traditional features and the room was further softened by way of wall sconces which complemented a large feature pendant light over the dining table.

All the bedrooms had a modern aesthetic; materials and fabric choices created a feeling of warmth and wellbeing. In the upper floors of the house where the ceilings were lower, elaborate cornicing gave way to a simpler light coving which helped to maintain the feeling of height and grandeur. LLI Design successfully balanced the traditional with the contemporary in this project, seamlessly creating a beautiful, exceptionally comfortable family home."
