About Us

Since 2011, Bess Sturman’s Ilkley studio has been Yorkshire’s go-to for complex interior refurbishment projects, completed to a relentlessly high standard. With unparalleled experience in both heritage and new build country homes around Yorkshire, Sturman & Co's unique brand of professionalism will make larger projects feel effortless, while their designs create an enduring sense of style.

At Sturman & Co. the thinking is that the way a space functions for you, your family and friends is just as important as the way that it looks. By carefully balancing creativity with diligence and process, the studio's interiors invite clients to live beautifully and well.

Subtlety, natural elegance and poise are at the heart of the studio's aesthetic. Bess has become known for her artistry in creating architectural interior designs which interpret the available space to make it feel improbably generous. Designs are classically understated and she often relies on art, antiques and modern craftsmanship to bring individuality to each project. An alchemy with colours combined with the utmost care and attention to detail, creates homes characterised by an alluring sense of warmth and familiarity.

How would you describe your style?

"Bess’s aesthetic is influenced by a lifetime spent on her own travels and visiting art galleries whenever possible, together with a love of the historic English home. She loves the challenge of creating something different each time and using original bespoke or antique pieces. To Bess, warmth is the single most important ingredient for a family home; something which can be found in the use of wood, wool, and other natural textures throughout her designs."

"We recently completed work on an 18th-century manor house in Yorkshire. Although tired in appearance, our clients were able to see the potential of this wonderfully preserved family home. To create a comfortable and relaxed interior that respects the period features of the property yet also provides a current feel, we used a mix of classic and modern pieces. Our clients wanted a graceful yet contemporary feel which we achieved by using a light colour scheme and natural materials, giving the property a beautiful ambience. The family were delighted with the result, saying that the house had reclaimed its elegance but with an added injection of modern energy."
