I was introduced to the client back in 2005 and this garden was my first project after being the famous garden designer Arne Maynard’s right hand man for almost ten years. The hall is a Grade I listed Queen Anne house and had been beautifully and sympathetically restored by it’s owners. I was initially commissioned to design two areas of the garden, the front to stop people parking there and the side to give pleasure gardens to walk and sit in. The front Buxus knot garden was designed based on a historic Italian gate in the park and was designed to look good on the ground and also viewed from above from the master bedroom. Lavenders pick up on the nearby commercial lavender fields and look their best when the whole family is back from school/college and are in residence. The size of the grass oval was carefully considered to get the look right and also so cars were able to manoeuvre around it easily. The rill garden is on a strong access to the west that runs the entire width of the Hall. The spout of the fountain can be seen from the kitchen and draws one out into the garden visually and aurally with it’s gentle splashing. Layers of Hornbeam and Yews provide privacy and shelter from the wind while the rill itself brings light and the reflection of the sky down into the garden. A pair of matching and curvaceous Buxus (Box) hedging areas provide beds for seasonal herbaceous flowers which smell amazing and attract beneficial bees and butterflies.
