This classic New York City brownstone is on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, just a stone’s throw from Central Park. Though it had already been the subject of a thorough renovation three years earlier, when the current owners purchased it, the upper floors were being used as offices and the architectural detailing throughout was very traditional in style. They wanted a space that reflected their contemporary sensibilities and provided a home for their extensive contemporary art collection; but first and foremost they wanted a home that was the warm, functional hub of a busy family life. A new staircase and new chimney breasts were designed, architectural mouldings were streamlined, and new lighting was installed to showcase the art, which includes works by Willem de Kooning, Damien Hirst and Olafur Eliasson. The interiors showcase a mix of contemporary designs and twentieth-century classics, with the personalities of the parents and four children variously reflected throughout the house.
