Maitland & Poate is a family-ran business which started when its founder’s obsession for antique encaustic tiles kicked in during the renovation of their own Victorian London home. Determined to repurpose materials and reclaim as much as possible it was clear that finding authentic vintage tiles was a huge and challenging task in the UK. Nothing they found came close to the quality or designs they wanted; visions instilled from previous Spanish travels. Deciding to return to Spain and search out those antique tiles direct from crumbling cortijo’s, forgotten bodegas and ancient ruined houses their passion grew for saving rare and unique designs, reclaiming and renovating to share those finds with others.

"Unearthed from deepest Andalucia our exquisite antique tile collection includes only the exceptional and outstanding. Spain’s flair for vibrancy, passion for colours and heritage artisan skills are all showcased in the beautifully intricate designs of our finds.
Our bespoke search and sourcing service is in addition to those we personally select for those with specific projects looking for colourways or styles to suit. Our sourcing service will find and send a choice of tile designs for you to decide upon. They are then rescued and painstakingly restored to the depth desired for your individual project.
Handmade designs to batch quantities of new encaustic tiles created by our tile artisans is another service we offer. The finish of these new tiles is also tailored to the desired effect you are looking for – an antique patina can be applied for an aged effect or left in the natural state for a more vibrant effect.
Equally, if you have a stunning old tile you would like recreated or ideas on what design and colourways you exactly need but are unable to find, depending on the quantity needed, we will happily explore making a new tile design for you. Tiles are our passion so if we can share this journey with you, we would be delighted."
