This project represented a rare opportunity to completely restore and transform a locally listed Edwardian property that had not been on the market for over 50 years. The property - built by Charles Barry the namesake grandson of Houses of Parliament architect Charles Barry Senior - had obviously once been a grand old space in its time but required epic bouts of imagination to drag it into the 21st century. The 4000+ sq. ft. country home originally featured three bedrooms - neither en suite. There were a warren of ancient corridors and the kitchen, a pokey space was duly hidden away and with no designated dining space. Acting as both interior designer and project manager, I used the £500,000 budget to undertake a wholesale restructuring of the space which involved creating five bedrooms, three of which were ensuite, moving the kitchen to the back of the property, so it could benefit from seamless access to the garden, adding a dining space, digging out a cellar to create a basement cinema room, wine storage and gym and extensive landscaping. Original features were preserved and a decorative scheme featuring commissioned art and a mixture of contemporary furniture and antiques was conceived. The end result was a punchy period property which is now beautifully reflective of how we live today.
