How would you describe your style?

Conservation architecture is the creative process of looking after a building or place so as to retain its special qualities, remedy its defects, and secure its future vitality. At Donald Insall Associates we specialise in conserving and adapting historic buildings and designing new buildings in historically sensitive settings. Our belief is that good design is not merely a matter of style, but the realisation of a considered brief through the skilled deployment of form, materials and detailing. We work closely with our clients to achieve their aspirations as well as care for the building we are working with. Every project begins by understanding a building or place thoroughly; this means researching and analysing its materials, construction, history, purpose, function and aesthetic qualities. Given that the understanding of what is special about a building or place changes over time, the aim of most conservation projects should be the preservation of historic fabric, while undertaking the interventions necessary to secure continued use.

As conservation architects established over 60 years ago, Donald Insall Associates oversaw the full refurbishment of this Grade II listed former townhouse located in the Mayfair conservation area. This involved extending the large four-storey apartment, at the same time as renovating the premises of Connolly England, a new high-end leather brand below the apartment, for the same client. The project saw all remaining aspects of the 300-year-old building’s historic fabric conserved and repaired, with features of the original townhouse reinstated, including traditional panelling, fireplaces and joinery. The unique original 1719 timber staircase was extended up into the new two-storey mansard, along with a new lift shaft for modern convenience, which allowed for full use of all available space within the restraints of the conservation area and listed building status. Luxury interiors by a Paris-based interior designer were also integrated into the design. The Connolly brand is renowned for luxury leather, having been used by distinguished car makers including Rolls Royce, Bentley and Jaguar, and has been used in various prestigious buildings, including the famous leather seats of the House of Lords and House of Commons. The Connolly England shop at 4 Clifford Street is a new home for the luxury fashion collection. As well as acting as architect, Donald Insall Associates undertook all liaising with the local authority for planning and listed building consent applications and acted as Historic Building Consultants to provide creative and practical advice based on thorough research and analysis.
