The brief was a total house refurbishment in North London with a two-storey steel-and-glass extension. The six-bedroom, detached house has a floor area of 4000 square feet over four floors. We were engaged to refurbish the house and to replace the existing timber-and-glass extension that overlooked a large north-facing garden. Our aim was to improve the physical environment in the living, dining and kitchen areas and to connect these rooms to the rest of the house, as well as facilitating the filtration of direct sunlight. Glazed wall slots and glass floor panels were used to connect the living areas and kitchen to each other as well as the garden. These also helped to filter sunlight into north-facing rooms. Internal metal mesh screens and external timber sliding shutters were used to introduce a degree of privacy. We sourced stone floors from Stone Age, tap fittings from Dornbracht, doors to the rear extension from Crittall, and light fittings from Modular Lighting.
