"The client wanted to transform their Notting Hill townhouse from a space that worked better for a couple to more of a family home. They extended their living space by building a double-height two-storey glass extension out into the garden encompassing the basement and ground floor levels. The client was very much at the forefront of the project and used me to help implement and complete their vision. My brief was to help them create both a family friendly and also grown up and stylish interior. We kept the kitchen and children’s zone pared back and modern with cool greys and blues, combined with warm wood, giving off a Scandinavian vibe and allowing the architecture to speak for itself, with its very old and its very new. The seamless glass allowed no place for a hanging pendant so a wonderful Serge Mouille wall light installation at ground floor level created a special moment as you enter the front of the house and from above when you are standing in the basement. The ground floor is a sophisticated and grown up space where we layered calm tones of grey and off-white with pops of blue and emerald green. We used vinyl wallpaper that looks like linen but is practical and works well in what is essentially a high-traffic and entertaining space. We introduced subtle layers of materials and textures with antiqued glass, horsehair, lacquer, wood, bronze, velvet and leather to create depth and interest. The overall look was stylish and sophisticated, yet comfortable and fun, with a strong sense of home."
