About Us

Established in 1984, Simon Smith and Michael Brooke Architects Ltd. bring a wealth of experience to every project with many years of success in dealing with the contradictions of planning legislation across the UK. With a founding focus to listen to the client and deliver high-quality design, Smith and Brooke Architects have established a strong portfolio of work for a private client base. Projects include a wide range of refurbishment projects, new build houses, restaurants and museums, often working with Listed Buildings and within Conservation Areas.

Each project is carefully tailored to address the specific client’s brief and needs whilst simultaneously looking to challenge the site conditions to maximise the potential and value of each site. Smith and Brooke's projects look to respect the historic fabric of existing buildings and sites but reinvent these for modern uses, thoughtfully combining old and new. A majority of their projects are focused in central London but often take them further afield working with long-standing clients on private houses and estates throughout England, Wales and Scotland.

Working closely with clients from concept to completion Smith and Brooke enjoy designing across all scales and pride themselves on delivering thoughtful and considered schemes. Smith and Brooke offer a full range of architectural services that includes assistance with joinery, interiors, landscaping, garden and furniture design. With their experience, they help to steer their clients gently through what can often be an overwhelming process.  Smith and Brooke use hand drawings, watercolours and 3D renders to help communicate ideas effectively and work closely alongside external consultants to deliver coordinated, practical and beautiful projects to the highest standards in tandem with safeguarding their client’s budgets.

"We sought planning permission to convert a tired London townhouse within a conservation area from five bedsits back into a single family home, with the extra addition of a fifth storey to the top floor. Our role was to provide a full architectural service, from concept through to completion. This saw us working closely alongside our client to produce initial sketch schemes with budget planning, through to the production of a full set of working drawings and written specification. These included the design of lighting, electrics and drainage in addition to the production of internal elevations of the kitchen, utility, bathrooms and dressing rooms. We devised a robust set of documents for pricing (and included detailed joinery design for onsite construction) to create a considered scheme that met the needs and wishes of our client, resulting in a home where they can entertain, work and grow as a family.

Current projects include the conversion and extension of a barn in Oxfordshire. The design reuses elements from the original elm barn to create a new three-bedroom home and house for our clients’ contemporary collection of art. We are also working on the creation of a museum in Holland Park, which is grade I-listed. As part of our role we commonly liaise with the party wall surveyor, engineers and building control on behalf of our clients and go onto administer the building contract. This involves weekly site meetings, which are minuted, as well as dealing with valuations and certificates to ensure the client is only ever paying for work carried out."
