Dreamt up in a Victorian townhouse in 2011 by Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle as a reaction to the white-walled living and throwaway culture of the past decade, they had the vision to meld a heritage aesthetic with a contemporary twist, and to create a brand that wasn’t just inspired by nature but did well for nature. The couple spent a year travelling around the UK to seek out factories and artisans who champion traditional craftsmanship with a lighter environmental footprint, to help forge a brand that uses business as a force for good.

The House created is a sanctuary from the busy modern world, adorned with prints and colours inspired by Mother Nature. For House of Hackney, a product is never just a ‘product’, but a piece with purpose, created for both its beauty and its meaning. These ‘future heirlooms’ are artistically designed with sustainability principles, made in Britain by craftspeople specialising in generations-old trades, that will be cherished for years to come.

Today the husband-and-wife team has grown into a family of artists, designers, producers and collaborators. Proudly certified as a B Corp, House of Hackney reaches the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. With pioneering production methods and ever-evolving ecological targets, the House has established itself as a forerunner in business that respects collective thriving and beautiful interiors inspired by the natural world.
